Here I breathe freely

For the Tilburg Institute for Musical theatre Boy wrote and directed in 2024 a large-scale musical theatre production about the Dutch King William II who had his residence in Tilburg in the 19th century. It was a theatre show with over 70 participants from the Tilburg municipality and its surroundings. ‘Her I breathe freely’ was everything that a musical should be: a spectacular show about love, infidelity, heroism and broken dreams. But William II was also the King that ‘gave’ democracy to the people of the Netherlands, voluntarily giving up absolute power in 1848, in favor of the people. In his last moments before his death, William asks the audience: how will you, the people, deal with my ‘gift’. Will you also accept the responsibility that comes with power? Or will you behave like consumers of the system?
