King of Democracy
Client Professor Martijn Groenleer from Tilburg University:
We wanted to use theatre as a conversation starter to discuss some governmental legal matters with a group of legal professionals. We were surprised by how close the theatre play approached the complex legal reality. It did so in a very humorous and accessible way, without making a caricature of the subjects. It provided us with a more vivid substantial discussion than we would have had without using the theatre as a conversation starter.
Apart from his own artistic initiatives, Boy Jonkergouw makes theatre for organisations and institutes that struggle with complex social issues or have a desire to visualise these issues in a multi-perspective and accessible manner. Assigned by the engage festival, an initiative of Tilburg University and 8 other European Universities, Boy Jonkergouw wrote and directed ‘King of Democracy’. A play about the state of democracy in the European Union. For the Tilburg law faculty Boy wrote and directed 3 monologues highlighting three governmental legal challenges and, assigned by the municipality, Boy made a play about local democracy in the old part of the Tilburg City town hall. The theatrical interventions are always full of humour but never superficial.
